Corn Steep Liquor (CSL) is a byproduct of the corn wet milling process, as well as several other commercial corn processing industries. CSL material from the wet milling process has been considered non-synthetic in the past by stakeholders including accredited certifying agents (ACAs) and the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). It has been used for many years as a nonsynthetic input mostly in liquid fertilizer formulations for organic crop production.


Corn steep liquor has a nitrogen content around 7% mostly in the form of amino acids and polypeptides. It also has around 4% of phosphorus and potassium.   CSLs also have high lactic acid content, a result of fermentation in the steep water by lactic acid bacteria.   The NPK content varies due to corn quality and processing differences between mills. Corn steep liquor is excellent replacement for other organic fertilizers such as fish emulsion, chicken litter, soybean meal, or feather meal.   CSL nitrogen is readily available to the plant and not dependent on microbial activity for digestion and release.  


Corn Steep Powder (CSL Powder, Corn steep liquor powder) is a fine, free-flowing, yellow to yellow-brown, water-soluble powder made by spray drying corn steep liquor.   Corn steep powder is more convenient to transport and store than corn steep liquor. Corn steep powder can be used in crop, fertilizer, animal feed and fermentation industry.

Application:

Corn steep liquor & powder can be used as organic fertilizer and soil conditioner be run through irrigation. It can also be used in the production of organic fertilizer, especially liquid fertilizer. It can support growth of microorganisms that convert waste materials into useable fertilizer.


Corn steep liquor powder use as a fertilizer is a more recent development that has the potential to impact the organic plant growth market. Dried into a soluble powder, it is an easily transportable fertilizer that is as efficient as urea and ammonium sulfate.   It has major advantages over synthetic nitrogen since it is less likely to cause injury and the nitrogen is present in ready to use amino acid and peptide forms. It has an advantage over other organic fertilizers.
